SUSTAINABILITY

ECO-FRIENDLY & SUSTAINABLE MALDIVES RESORT

Located in such close proximity to Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we see sustainability as a non-negotiable and we keep it at the core of everything we do. A big focus is dedicated on the resorts ‘Green Engage’ initiatives to minimise carbon footprint and to be a leading sustainable hotel in the Maldives.

PRESERVING PARADISE,
ONE STEP AT A TIME

REDUCE

MINIMISING THE WASTE OF PLASTIC, GLASS, AND FOOD
While the world is slowly (but surely) reducing the amount of single-use plastic, we here at Maamunagau are doing our part in contributing to saving our planet from excessive toxic fumes. We are proud to share that we have implemented a glass crushing system that helps us minimise the particles of glass, to use as part of a component alongside aggregate in concrete work.

Wastage of food is thoroughly monitored and registered, aiming to keep this to a minimum. Strict procedures are in place to ensure efficiency and care when it comes to food shipment and preparation. Here in Maamunagau, we as a team are committed to reducing the use of plastic by 90%., and glass waste by 80% as an ongoing process. Year by year, with the use of new technology and investments, we are optimising the use of resources and reduction of any waste products

REUSE

SOLAR POWER
At the heart of our beautiful island of Maamunagau, we are passionate about conserving our fragile environment and working with the latest technology to help our future.

As such, we are proud to say that we have installed a total of 1577 heavy-duty solar panels to date, which cover an area of 2594 sqm – over the roofs of our administrative building. The solar power system produces 952,620 Kwh, which is 15% of the resort’s total energy requirement resulting in a whopping reduction of 900 tons of CO2, annually.

RECYCLE

ULTRAFILTRATION AND RETICULATION
While the use (and wastage) of water is a sensitive topic, we here at Maamunagau are committed to conserving our water and re-using it as treated water through a system of Ultrafiltration and Reticulation Plant System.

This system helps carry a production capacity of 155,000 litres of water per day. This high-functioning treatment plant can store and distribute the treated water in fields such as the irrigation lines, bathrooms for the colleagues’ accommodations, and cooling towers as well as the air-conditioned chilled water lines. This helps us recycle used water and manage our wastage tremendously throughout the resort.

ISLAND NATURE

CORAL PLANTATION AND RESTORATION
One effective way to contribute to the preservation of coral reefs is by participating in coral reef restoration programs. Here we use a technique that involves cultivating corals that reproduce asexually by attaching small coral pieces to rope nurseries. Smaller corals have higher growth rates and can become strong, resilient corals within two years. Once the corals have matured and become resilient, they are removed from the rope and planted back onto dead reefs. This helps to bring back the vibrant colours and life to the reef.

At Intercontinental Maldives, guests can participate in our coral reef restoration program. By sponsoring a coralline, guests can help us with an essential step towards securing the reef that surrounds our island for a long time to come. While issues with coral reefs cannot be solved immediately, working together can make a huge difference.

TURTLE NESTING

HAVEN FOR SEA TURTLES
Maamunagau Island is a haven for sea turtles. We protect their nests and witness the incredible journey of hatchlings to the ocean. These turtles, born on the same island, return years later to complete the circle of life.

OUR COMMUNITY

ADDING VALUE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
The Maldives islands are a natural paradise home to a plethora of unique and beautiful natural wonders worth protecting as well as an engaged local community working with us on diverse programmes and initiatives. From supporting local schools to suppliers and shops, InterContinental Maldives is committed to giving back and adding value to the local economy and community.

Embracing and supporting the local culture benefits not just the community but also guests. Local collaborations enable us to deliver a deeper and more authentic Maldives guest experience and serve the freshest fish and seafood catch every day.

FOSTERING THE FUTURE

CAREER AFTER GRADUATION
Students from local island visit the resort on a regular basis, to explore career opportunities and to see a resort front and back of house, often for the first time. Providing insights and offering support for young students to find their way into the hospitality industry is a small first step for many to begin their resort career after graduation.

For those interested, young islanders have the opportunity to join the resort for a six months internship, to fulfil the practical part of their studies, often leading to the opportunity returning for full employment post-graduation. On regular occasions, we support fundraising events for local island schools, by visiting their events with purchasing power and enabling the schools to purchase schooling equipment and to support students in need.

BUYING LOCAL

SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITY
As a benefit to our guests and the local community, we are sourcing our seafood and fish fresh from the fishing boats that bring their catch to our shores. Our Executive Chef keeps a close connection to local fishermen to make sure we are able to purchase the freshest quality in the right quantity so that no produce goes to waste. At the same time, we are using local chapatti bakers to provide chapatti for the resort on a daily basis – one of the staple foods for most of our colleagues.

Our resort colleagues also do not miss out on regular shopping trips to close-by local islands, supporting local shops and keeping in touch with the local community.
