MALDIVES HOUSE REEFS CONSERVATION EFFORTS

Published on: 01 Jun 2024
Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a marine biologist?

My name is Gareth, and I am the marine biologist from Ocean Group at InterContinental Maldives, leading the coral replantation and rehabilitation project. Growing up on the coast of South Africa, I developed a love for the ocean, inspired by my parents, who are scuba divers. After visiting the Maldives in 2008, I learned to scuba dive and was captivated by its beauty. This led me to pursue a degree in Marine Biology and a master's in the field. Now, back in the Maldives, I am dedicated to coral restoration and guest education at Maamunagau.

What are the critical goals of the coral plantation and rehabilitation project at our house reef?

The coral plantation and rehabilitation project at InterContinental Maamunagau aims to protect and restore our house reef's ecosystem. Our goals include: Increasing coral cover and ecosystem resilience.

  • Creating vital habitats for marine species.
  • Enhancing guest snorkelling experiences.
  • Coral cover and biodiversity should be restored to protect the Maldives' ecological services.
Can you explain the process of coral plantation and how it contributes to reef restoration?

Coral restoration is a meticulous and patient process. It begins with the collection of small coral fragments, which are then nurtured in floating nurseries. Once they have grown, these corals are carefully transplanted to the house reef using reef-safe marine epoxy. The health and resilience of the transplanted corals are closely monitored, aiding in the recovery of the reef's structure and habitat.

What are some of the challenges faced in coral conservation, especially in the Maldives?

Coral conservation is not without its challenges, especially in the face of the global bleaching event. The Maldives, in particular, is at the forefront of these challenges, being highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. This threat endangers reef ecosystems that are not only crucial for tourism and fishing but also for coastal protection.
What role do guests and visitors play in supporting coral rehabilitation initiatives?

Guests and visitors play a crucial role in our coral restoration efforts. By experiencing our healthy reefs, they become conservation ambassadors. They can adopt a coral, learn about coral reefs, and contribute to our research program. Their experiences and advocacy help promote and support our coral conservation initiatives. Witnessing coral reef degradation can turn guests into powerful advocates for rehabilitation efforts.

Can you share any success stories or positive outcomes from the coral plantation and rehabilitation work?

Despite the global bleaching event, we monitor resilient corals and generate valuable scientific data to produce hardier corals. Our work has optimized methods for growing disease-free, genetically diverse coral colonies, which are crucial for future restoration efforts.

Through our coral plantation and rehabilitation projects, and with the support of our dedicated marine biologist, we strive to preserve and restore the vibrant underwater world that makes the Maldives so unique.
