SLOW OCEAN ADVENTURES TO DISCOVER THE WATERS AROUND MAAMUNAGAU

Published on: 19 Oct 2026
There is more than one way to spend a day in the Maldives. You might head out early to snorkel, spend an hour paddling across the lagoon, or find yourself lingering in the water long after you had planned to return to shore. Sometimes, the best moments are the ones that were never part of the itinerary.

At InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, the ocean is part of everyday island life. Set in Raa Atoll, the resort offers access to clear lagoons, coral reefs and waters that are home to an extraordinary variety of marine life. Exploring them need not mean packing the day with activities. Often, a little time and curiosity are enough.
Start Close to Shore

You do not always have to travel far to see what lies beneath the surface. The house reef, just steps from the beach, offers a chance to explore the underwater world at your own pace. Look closely and the reef begins to reveal itself: fish moving between coral formations, changing patterns of light, and, with a little luck, a turtle passing through.

For something quieter, take a kayak or stand-up paddleboard onto the lagoon. Without an engine, there is little to interrupt the sounds around you. You can follow the curve of the island, pause to look into the water or simply let the current of the day decide how far you go.

These are simple ways to experience the Maldives, but they offer a different perspective. From the water, the island feels quieter, and the details are easier to notice.
Let Raa Atoll Set the Scene

Beyond the resort, Raa Atoll offers more to explore. Boat excursions can take you to different snorkelling sites, while time out on the water may bring the chance to see dolphins travelling through the atoll. Every outing is different, which is part of the appeal. Marine life follows its own patterns, and sightings are never something to take for granted.

For those who would like more time at sea, a private yacht charter offers the freedom to shape the day around personal interests, whether that means finding a suitable place to snorkel or spending a little longer out on the open water.

There is no need to fit everything into one trip. Choosing a single outing and giving it time can be just as rewarding as visiting several places in a day.
A Closer Look at the Manta Rays

Few encounters capture the character of the Maldivian ocean quite like seeing a manta ray glide through the water. Around Maamunagau, the lagoon is an important feeding ground for juvenile manta rays, making the surrounding waters particularly interesting for those keen to learn more about these animals.

Manta activity varies with the season. In the wider area, gatherings have been observed around the new and full moons between June and November, while juvenile manta rays may be found feeding in the lagoon during the north-east monsoon months, from December to March. Conditions and sightings vary, so it is worth speaking with the resort’s marine team about what may be possible during your stay.

If you do encounter a manta ray, allow it space to move naturally and follow the guidance of your marine guide. The aim is not to get as close as possible, but to observe without interrupting what is happening around you.

It is a small distinction, but an important one. The most meaningful wildlife encounters leave room for the animal to remain undisturbed.
Exploring with Care

Enjoying the ocean also means being mindful of it. Coral reefs are living environments, and even well-intentioned visitors can cause damage by standing on coral, touching marine life or leaving anything behind.

A few thoughtful choices make a difference. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife, follow local guidance when snorkelling, and choose activities that suit the conditions on the day. Non-motorised options, such as kayaking and paddleboarding, offer a quieter way to explore the lagoon, while guided excursions can help visitors understand the marine environment they are seeing.

Sustainable marine tourism is not simply about choosing the right activity. It is also about how we behave while taking part in it.
Leave Room in the Day

Not every day at the resort needs to revolve around an excursion. After a morning on the water, there may be nothing better than returning to shore, taking a long lunch or spending some time at AVI Spa. Another day might call for an afternoon paddle, followed by an evening watching the light change across the lagoon.

The point is not to do less for the sake of it. It is to leave enough room for the unexpected: a turtle appearing near the reef, a pod of dolphins in the distance, or the realisation that you have been out on the water far longer than you intended.

The waters around Maamunagau offer plenty to explore, often best enjoyed without a fixed plan. To begin planning your stay, visit the resort website or contact the reservations team. For the latest news, seasonal offers and more island inspiration, you can also sign up to the resort newsletter.
