Inspired by the World Ocean Day on 8 June 2023, InterContinental Maldives launches a new guest experience, celebrating some of the most gentle yet giant creatures of the ocean. The new Manta Ray Experiences offer allows guests to experience, explore and learn about the gentle giants, collecting first-hand impressions of manta rays in their natural surroundings.
The World Ocean Day 2023
The World Ocean Day was introduced in the early 90s as a celebration of the oceans whilst raising awareness of the importance of preserving marine life, a healthy ecosystem, and the fascinating stories still left to be explored. Celebrating the World Ocean Day at Maamunagau doesn’t take much, considering the location of the tropical island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, at the outskirts of Raa Atoll in the Maldives. This World Ocean Day will be filled with fun ocean-themed activities, not just about manta rays but also other ocean matters such as plankton and the protection of marine life. Our island-based marine biologist and Manta Trust team are preparing to welcome kids and adults on this special day, so they shed light on what needs more of our attention.
The Manta Ray Experience Offer
The newly launched Manta Ray Experience offer will take guests through different talks about the manta rays of the Maldives, their relatives around the world, how they are researched, and steps taken by our team to ensure their protection. In addition to this, we welcome those with a curious and adventurous mind to join our excursions seeking out the gentle giants within Raa Atoll and surrounding areas. Guests are also welcome to take part in naming a manta if they may find one yet unidentified and receive updates on their whereabouts whenever the Manta Trust team sights them.
The Manta Retreat
While the Manta Ray Experience is an all-around experience guests can book anytime, the annual Manta Retreat offers a deeper dive into a hands-on experience in manta research and exploration. Guests interested in the Manta Retreat shall keep their calendars marked for March 2024, when the next retreat will be held at InterContinental Maldives.
